Long fingernails

I’d always dreamt of having long nails but I never expected it to become an obsession. Now, I’m loving life with my 24 inch talons.
By Yani Williams, 57, from Houston in Texas

I watched in awe as Mum painted the shiny red varnish over her perfectly shaped fingernails.

“Can I paint mine?” I begged.

But at just seven years old, Mum thought I was too young.

I knew better than to argue, but I longed for the day I could fashion my own glamorous red nails like her.

As I grew older I loved trying out different colours nail polishes, but it wasn’t until I was 24 that my obsession took off.

I was contacted by a man who promoted women who grew their nails, and he persuaded me to just let mine grow.

I was sceptical at first, but I thought I’d give it a go and the results completely transformed my life.

As the length of my nails grew, so did my love for them.

At first I found them sexy, but as they extended beyond 10 inches, I started to feel exotic.

They showed off my wild side, as well as my patience and determination. They became my prize jewels.

Now they measure between 19 and 24 inches long, and I’ve even grown my toenails to a staggering five inches!

It’s a struggle to do everyday tasks – even just getting ready to leave the house can take four hours.

I also can’t exercise through fear of breaking my toenails, and I can only wear flip-flops or tennis shoes if I cut the ends off.

My five children think I’m mad and have tried to persuade me to cut them, but my nails are half of who I am now – they’re like extra limbs.

It might seem weird and wacky to some people, but I don’t care.

I could never cut them, my nails are my besties!
