There’s no need to be shy about asking how much your story is worth. The fact is, the press do pay for stories and it’s only fair you get the best possible price for selling your story to the media. We don’t care what you spend the money on – that’s entirely up to you!

Exactly how much money your story is worth will depend on a number of factors. This includes how long ago your story happened, what photographs you can provide, and what your story is about. Catching an editor’s attention at the right moment is really important too – one day they might pay hundreds of pounds for a story, when the day before it wouldn’t have been topical for them.

As a rough guide, smaller stories covering just one page, or even part of a page, in a magazine or paper will be worth up to a few hundred pounds.

A larger story in a magazine or newspaper, where the story is particularly shocking or unusual, can be worth between £300 and £1,000.

A big story connected with a current event, celebrity or high profile court case can be worth from £1,000 up to around £10,000.

An appearance on a television show will usually earn you £100 to £300, plus all your travel expenses.
